Cloud Infrastructure Transformation Program Begins Work on CUI Proof of Concept

Cloud Infrastructure Transformation Program Begins Work on CUI Proof of Concept By Hugh Briggs The University of Michigan has been working on a effort to ensure that the university is compliant with the new regulations concerning the use of Controlled Unclassified Information(CUI). But what is CUI? In an effort to better protect federal information, the U.S. government continues to expand and refine laws and regulations that create expectations and requirements for how certain types of federal data are to be secured. These include laws and regulations that carry over to non government entities, like universities. One of the most recent laws that affect universities, including U-M has to do with Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). CUI is information from US federal agencies that non-federal agencies may access using specific security controls. So what steps has U-M already taken to ensure that our researchers can comply with this new regulation? Representatives from the Universit...

Information Assurance Notice: Email extortion scams continuing with variations Information Assurance is continuing to get reports of extortion emails at U-M from scammers claiming to have incriminating evidence of inappropriate online behavior. In the latest variation on this scam, the extortion email appears to come from the recipient's own email address, making it look like the scammer has access to the recipient's email account. In actuality, the "From" address has been forged. https://www.safecomputing.umich.edu/security-alerts/email-extortion-scams-continuing-variations

Arbor Lakes networks to better reflect campus environment

Arbor Lakes networks to better reflect campus environment On Friday, October 26, 2018, ITS network staff will begin replacing network access switches in the Arbor Lakes building. This work is expected to continue through next week, and will take place between 5–8 a.m. (the typical, in-building maintenance window). Wired connectivity will be briefly impacted (a one-time outage for users connected to the switch), including workstations, VoIP phones, etc., while new hardware is swapped in and configured. We do not expect any outages to the wireless networks. Why is this change being made? ITS Infrastructure is replacing network access switches to ensure our network environment at Arbor Lakes reflects the network configurations we support on campus. Being a microcosm of campus helps us to better test changes to our network before rolling them out to campus, resulting in a better experience to campus users. Although we don’t expect any major disruptions to staff, please let us know if you a...

Cryptocurrency Mining Risks and U-M Restrictions

Image
Cryptocurrency Mining Risks and U-M Restrictions You may not use U-M resources—computers, networks, electricity—for cryptocurrency mining. Such use violates university policy and puts U-M services and data, and your personal accounts and devices, at risk. The Responsible Use of Information Resources (SPG 601.07) policy states that U-M resources may not be used "for personal commercial purposes or for personal financial or other gain." The Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities states that students must abide by university computer policies. This means that all persons are barred from using U-M resources of any kind for cryptocurrency mining outside of approved research and course work. Mining is a highly resource-intensive activity that often slows both computer and network performance, and increases electrical costs. Cryptocurrency mining is also a growing contributor to compromised computers and accounts, which can lead to lost personal information: - Attackers so...

Systems Resiliency & Disaster Avoidance Work Update

Systems Resiliency & Disaster Avoidance Work Update ITS Infrastructure resiliency efforts continue. One project that is making significant resiliency improvements is the Virtual Private Network (VPN) upgrade. The VPN creates a secure, encrypted connection between devices and the university network and enables access to university IT resources from untrusted networks. The project is designed to simplify the current VPN solution and provide redundant connections in the School of Education Building (SEB) and the North Campus Data Center (NCDC) to improve resiliency. The VPN connections going forward will include: - Remote access that allows individuals to be able to log into university resources. - A VPN service for Site-to-Site tunnels to campus for all other traffic, including certain connections between U-M and three cloud providers Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. - A recently designed solution for Payment Card Industry (PCI) data. The project will ...

Ansible - Improving How We Maintain ITS Systems

Image
Ansible - Improving How We Maintain ITS Systems There are a number of new terms buzzing around ITS, and one of them is Ansible. What is Ansible? Ansible is an open source automation platform that can help with configuration management, application deployment, and task automation. It can also do IT orchestration, where you run tasks in sequence to create a sequence of events which can interact with multiple servers, services or devices. The Cloud Infrastructure Transformation Program has conducted training for their Technical team in Ansible, and is leveraging Ansible for work in the Virtual Data Center. Others at ITS are using this tool to automate their work, one of these teams is us, Infrastructure's own, System Support Unix. Recently, we've been moving work into Ansible Playbooks for patching and are replacing the process of patching servers with Ansible’s more automated processes. The deprecated process allowed us to run commands on 100’s of servers at the same time, bu...

Cloud Storage Integration

Cloud Storage Integration Hello, I’m pleased to announce that ITS has successfully adopted Amazon Web Services’ Simple Storage Service (AWS S3) to seamlessly store aging campus files and save university MiStorage capital funds. When MiStorage was first created in the early 2010’s the funding model purchased initial equipment and covered the cost to replace that equipment on a five-year depreciation schedule. While this kept rates competitive and incented early campus adoption, it did not take into account that the service would be so successful that it would grow at ~20% rate annually. This translated into a ~$1-2 million per year request for additional storage shares and routine funding conversations between ITS and the Provost. ITS was challenged by campus leaders to find a way to operationalize these growing costs. The storage team explored several alternatives over the past several years, including leasing and cloud solutions. The breakthrough solution came when our storage vendor ...

NCDC Network

NCDC Network Hello, I’m pleased to announce that the ITS Network Engineering & Operations team has successfully delivered an ITS Network in the North Campus Data Center (NCDC). The project started in 2016 when ITS committed to free up 1 Megawatt of space for research growth in the Michigan Academic Computing Center (MACC) by moving ITS services and systems to NCDC. A foundational element of this move would be networking in NCDC with connectivity back to campus. In the past several years, ITS has scaled back plans to move as many services to NCDC. Some services have relocated to the cloud. Outdated services have been retired. Research computing has revised their immediate MACC needs. However, the networking project forged ahead, as the NCDC is central to some services plans for resiliency, and having a NCDC network allows for future growth and changes. Because the network was a green-field project, the Network teams explored some exciting network advancements as part of the project,...

Cloud Program Upcoming Activities

Cloud Program Upcoming Activities In September, I met with Ravi and the ITS Senior Staff to give them an update on the Cloud Program. There was strong support within that group for our efforts, and leaders wanted to continue to see further progress from the cloud technical team, working with other units within ITS, in adding additional functionality to the Virtual Data Center (vDC) and, as appropriate, migrating applications to the cloud. We also discussed how we might employ cloud technologies and tools across ITS, such that we begin to modernize our on-premise services and share our early cloud learning with the larger organization. Part of the feedback from Ravi and the Senior Staff was to get a better sense of the work the Cloud Program is doing and the types of results it will deliver by the end of October. In response, we shared a list of items the Cloud Program team, working with other units within ITS, will be working on in late September and through October, including: - Sta...

Cloud Jargon Decoded

Cloud Jargon Decoded Cloud efforts continue across ITS, the Senior Staff are discussing cloud strategies and possible migrations, and approximately 80 ITS staff members are attending Ansible sessions later this week to learn more about the platform. For many of our highly technical staff members, much of the information coming out about the cloud makes complete sense. For others, the cloud jargon can be puzzling. To assist, the Cloud Program team identified terminology related to our Amazon Web Services Virtual Data Center and posted terms and definitions on the Cloud Program website to help the larger team. It was designed to: - Define each capability or term, - Provide comparisons between AWS technologies and current ITS offerings, - Aid those less familiar with infrastructure in appreciating what the team has built. We encourage staff to review this site, and then join us in November when we plan to present several Roadshows for ITS staff on the: - Current Cloud Strategy, - The Clou...
